Kingston’s innovators highlighted at OCE Discovery 2009

May 8, 2009

KINGSTON, ON – Canada’s first Centre of Excellence for Green Chemistry Commercialization joins a roster of Kingston’s technology innovators at the Ontario Centres of Excellence Discovery 09 showcase in Toronto this month.

The annual event highlights research and innovation throughout Ontario and is expected to attract more than 1,500 delegates from across the innovation spectrum.  This year’s event, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre May 11-12, puts a special focus on technologies in the green, health and digital sectors.

Making its first public appearance at Discovery is GreenCentre Canada, a unique national venture that links Canada’s leading Green Chemistry researchers, industry partners, and commercialization professionals in a common goal of developing cleaner, less energy-intensive solutions for traditional chemical and manufacturing processes.

The Kingston-based national Centre of Excellence, announced in February 2009 by the the federal government, will be showcased in a booth with Innovation Park at Queen’s University , a centre devoted to industry-academic research and innovation.

In all, more than a dozen Kingston-based companies and organizations will be on display, exhibiting innovations in health care, prosthetics, tissue engineering, workplace injury prevention, energy efficiency, stroke assessment and digital media tracking, among others.

PARTEQ Innovations, the technology transfer office of Queen’s University, will attend, along with four of its spinoff companies: AdapCS.Canada Inc. creators of efficient surgery patient waiting list software, ASK Science Products Inc., developer of a patented device used in research and drug development; BKIN Technologies Ltd., specializing in robotic systems for assessing sensorimotor performance; and Xuuk, Inc., developer of long-range eye-trackers for digital media. All are recent recipients of development funding from OCE.

Queen’s Faculty of Applied Science will showcase the expertise of its eight engineering departments and five research centres, with displays that include micro gas turbines, solar photovoltaics, PEM fuel cells, composite walls, prosthetic feet and machine vision systems.

Representatives of the Eastern Lake Ontario Regional Innnovation Network (Elorin) and the Kingston Economic Development Corporation (KEDCO) will also have displays.

“OCE has a long history of collaborating with the innovators in our region. This event is a great opportunity for Kingston-area researchers and entrepreneurs to both showcase their technologies and strengthen the region’s profile as a centre of innovation,” says Randall North, Commercialization Manager, OCE and Director, Business Development at PARTEQ Innovations.
