Queens' cancer research technology licensed to BD Biosciences

For immediate release

March 24, 2004

KINGSTON, ON - A cancer research technology developed by two Queen's University scientists has been licensed to BD Biosciences, a business segment of Becton Dickinson and Company of Franklin Lakes, NJ by PARTEQ Innovations, the technology transfer arm of Queen's.

The company signed a non-exclusive agreement with PARTEQ for the rights to technology relating to multi-drug resistance proteins (MRPs), first discovered and cloned by Queen's cancer researchers Drs. Susan Cole and Roger Deeley. Discovery Labware, a business unit of BD Biosciences, will use the technology for the creation of commercial drug screening services and products under the BD GentestT brand.

The Queen's researchers' 1992 discovery has been critical to the understanding of drug resistance in cancer chemotherapy. Their research, which showed that these proteins act as molecular 'pumps,' transporting compounds out of cells, continues to be an important mechanism by which the body deals with many types of drugs.

"This technology, which PARTEQ began protecting in 1992, was a key breakthrough in understanding how human cancers adapt to and resist chemotherapy," says John Molloy, President and CEO of PARTEQ Innovations.

"As this latest agreement shows, MRP stands as one of our most sought-after technologies. More than 10 years after its discovery, it continues to contribute to the advancement of cancer research."
