Who owns intellectual property developed at Queen's?
Generally at Queen's, all intellectual property is owned by you, the creator(s), UNLESS some other arrangement has been agreed to in advance for certain categories of employment, for certain types of funding, or by individual contract. For information about IP policy as it pertains to you, please click on one of the following. For general questions about intellectual property, click here.

If you are a faculty member covered under the Collective Agreement between Queen's University and its faculty association (QUFA), see Article 16 (Page 40) of the Queen's Faculty Agreement.

If you are a researcher working under contract with an outside agency or company, see Section 14 of Queen's standard research agreement.

If you are a faculty member with an appointment to Kingston General Hospital, see Section 1-122 of the KGH Administrative Policy Manual. (KGH staff should consult Section 1-121.)

If you are a student, staff member or otherwise employed by the university, see Section 5 of the Senate Policy on Intellectual Property. Graduate students are also encouraged to refer to Sections 1.9 and 1.10 of the Roles and Responsibilities in Graduate Studies: A Guide.

If you are a postdoctoral fellow, please consult your faculty supervisor, as your relationship may be guided by the type of appointment and employment relationship you have at the university.
