KINGSTON, ON -- Dr. Stephen Harrison, a professor of mechanical engineering at Queen's University and the developer of a patented solar energy technology, has been honoured by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) for his contribution to sustainable alternative energy practices.

Dr. Harrison was presented with CMHC's Excellence in Education Award for his work with students in developing and promoting alternative energy technology, including his establishment of and ongoing involvement with the Queen's University Solar Vehicle Team. Also honoured was Dr. Gary vanLoon of the Department of Chemistry/School of Environmental Studies.

"Dr. Harrison and Dr. vanLoon are true champions of sustainability in their respective fields,” says Steve Jacques, Ontario Manager, Community Development and Research, CMHC. “They continue to educate, not only here in Canada but abroad as well, that sustainability happens at many levels.” The pair were cited for “creating the sustainability champions of the future.”

Dr. Harrison is internationally recognized for his research expertise in the development and evaluation of solar energy technology. His patented solar-powered hot water heater technology was licensed by PARTEQ Innovations, the technology transfer office of Queen's University, to EnerWorks Inc. of London, a manufacturer and developer of solar thermal appliances and systems for the North American market. The technology is in residential and commercial use in Alberta and Ontario.

The CMHC Excellence in Education Award recognizes secondary and postsecondary educators in Ontario who have integrated sustainable concepts in housing and community development into the academic curriculum. The award was established in 1993 to acknowledge that exemplary education and innovative environmental planning are essential to the development of sustainable communities.
