GB
Therapeutics announces new Board of Directors
March 18, 2002
KINGSTON, ON – GB Therapeutics, a leader in the
field of drug discovery for novel nitrates that act
as cellular protectants and cognition enhancers, is
pleased to announce the appointment of its new board
of directors, representing collectively more than 100
years of experience in the life sciences industry.
The appointments reflect a new era at GB (formerly GoBang)
Therapeutics, says Ian K. Anderson, President and CEO.
"We welcome the expertise that this dynamic group
brings to the table. With their proven track records
in the global and domestic pharmaceutical industry,
they offer the breadth of experience and networks that
are so vital to the corporate development of GB Therapeutics."
A spinoff company of Queen's University's
PARTEQ Innovations, GB Therapeutics was founded in 1997
on research breakthroughs by scientists at Queen's
University relating to the cell-protecting properties
of nitric oxide (NO).
Scientific appreciation of the biological importance
of nitric oxide has grown over the past decade, beginning
with its designation as "Molecule of the Year"
in 1992, and culminating in the awarding of a Nobel
Prize for the discovery and characterization of NO in
1998.
"GB Therapeutics is taking this fundamental scientific
discovery to the next level, in the design of novel
nitrates that offer all of the benefits of nitric oxide,
but without its limitations and side effects,"
says James Reynolds, Vice-President of Biological Sciences
for GBT, and co-founder of the company.
GBT's development of novel nitrates and nitrate-enhanced
molecules shows promise for the treatment of the cell
damage caused by heart attack and stroke, as well as
neurodegenerative diseases and epilepsy, Dr. Reynolds
says.
"With our innovative management team, including
Dr. Greg Thatcher, Vice-President of Medicinal Chemistry,
who designed and synthesized these nitrates, and backed
by our new board of directors, GB Therapeutics looks
forward to this exciting phase in our company's
development."
Directors of the board are as follows:
Ian Anderson, President & CEO GB Therapeutics, has
had a distinguished career in general management in
the international pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries
with such companies as Sterling Drug, Warner Lambert,
American Home, Fisons, Akzo, Biomira, Biomatrix and
SignalGene. This and his 17 years of board experience
in private and public technology companies and his extensive
involvement in financing and strategic partnering provide
important direction to GBT at this exciting stage of
its growth.
John Molloy, Chairman GB Therapeutics, is President
and CEO of PARTEQ Innovations, the technology-transfer
arm of Queen's University. He has been instrumental
in the development of 10 life science-based Canadian
startup companies. Mr. Molloy also represents the interests
of the Working Ventures-Queen's Scientific Breakthrough
Fund, which provided seed funding of $700,000 for the
company.
James Reynolds, PhD, Vice President Biological Sciences
GB Therapeutics, is a founder and manager of the firm
as well as a Professor of Pharmacology and Toxicology
at Queen's University. Dr. Reynolds' work in the field
of cellular and molecular neuropharmacology has been
funded by major granting agencies for the last dozen
years.
Jean-Paul St.Pierre, MD, is a practising specialist
clinician and former biotech CEO. Dr. St. Pierre has
broad international experience in clinical drug development
at the worldwide headquarters of Rhone Poulenc Rorer,
and earlier with Hoechst Marion Roussel and Sandoz in
Canada.
Lewis Slotin, PhD, is President & COO of MedTech
Partners, an early-stage technology investment company
within the MDS Capital family of companies.
Graham Strachan is Founding President of Allelix Pharmaceuticals,
a former President of the Biotechnology Industry Association
and a life science management consultant and professional
director.
Paul Wood, PhD, President & CEO Centaur Pharmaceuticals,
is an active career drug researcher and senior pre-clinical
development manager with previous experience at Elan,
Ciba-Geigy, Searle and Merck Frosst in the USA.
