International
IP experts launch PARTEQ educational series
Feb. 24, 2003
Issues relating to intellectual property and the commercialization
of university research are the focus of a new educational
initiative being kicked off by PARTEQ Innovations early
next month.
The first in a series of PARTEQ Educational Forums takes
place next Wednesday, March 5, when PARTEQ presents
"Issues surrounding the ownership of intellectual
property: Canadian and U.S. perspectives."
Two international experts in the field of intellectual
property law, Douglas Deeth of Deeth Williams Wall LLP,
Toronto, and David Brook of Hamilton, Brook, Smith &
Reynolds, P.C., Concord MA, will address intellectual
property-related issues from Canadian and U.S. perspectives,
including joint ownership, ownership liability, and
the implications of ownership in the commercialization
process. They will illustrate their talks with case
histories, and take questions from the audience.
The event takes place in the Biosciences Complex, Lecture
Theatre 1101, from 4:30-6 pm.
"In return for the recently announced federal funding
of the indirect costs of research, Canada's universities
have committed to tripling their commercialization revenues
over the next decade," says John Molloy, President
& CEO of PARTEQ Innovations. "It is therefore
important that faculty and staff have a better understanding
of the commercialization process. Through our speaker
series, we hope to stimulate discussion and raise awareness
about the implications and issues surrounding the commercialization
of publicly funded research."
Faculty, staff and graduate students are welcome. For
information, please call PARTEQ Innovations, 533.2342.
