President wins Kingston Technology Council's Champion
Award
January 30, 2001
KINGSTON, ON -- John Molloy, President and C.E.O. of
PARTEQ Innovations, the technology transfer office of
Queen's University, was awarded the Kingston Technology
Council's first annual Champion Award. The KTC Awards
of Excellence, honouring achievements in the technology
field, were presented before a sellout crowd of 200
at a gala dinner on January 27, 2001.
The Champion Award is presented to an individual who
has exhibited leadership in promoting knowledge-based
enterprises and an environment in which they can flourish.
The recipient is a strong advocate for Kingston and
area, both within and outside the Kingston community.
In his acceptance speech at the Awards gala, John Molloy
congratulated his fellow nominees, and thanked his family,
the PARTEQ staff, the Kingston Technology Council, and
all members of the Kingston technology community for
their support and co-operation. He also took the opportunity
to speak to those present about the pressing need in
Kingston for infrastructure facilities for newly emerging
companies.
PARTEQ Innovations is a not-for-profit corporation which
acts as the technology transfer agent for Queen's University.
PARTEQ has the exclusive rights to all intellectual
property owned by the University. PARTEQ's mission
is to stimulate and facilitate the commercialization
of intellectual property generated at Queen's and to
enhance and foster linkages between the Queen's
research community and industry. Social responsibility
and potential economic return drive PARTEQ's mission.
Queen's is a research-intensive university and PARTEQ
provides a means to ensure that discoveries with potential
public benefit are properly commercialized.
Under John Molloy's leadership, PARTEQ has actively
participated in the formation of 16 Canadian companies,
a number of them active in Kingston, and has licensed
technology that has led to the formation of nine other
companies. Together, these companies employ over 200
people and have raised in excess of $200 million to
support development of technology licensed by PARTEQ.
PARTEQ has also been entrusted with the management of
a $7 million venture capital fund, from which 11 investments
have been made, most in Kingston-based companies.
In his vision statement, John says of PARTEQ that "We
are agents of change. Every time we attempt to market
a new product, process or service, we have to overcome
resistance and some amount of inertia. We are, however,
skilled at providing innovative solutions and ways to
creatively structure relationships that give value to
all parties concerned."
John Molloy is committed to promoting the use of university-based
intellectual property as a means to enhance local economic
development. His priority has been to build local companies
because he believes Kingston is an ideal community for
technology transfer and associated economic development.
