Queen’s University’s PARTEQ Innovations, Ottawa universities and hospitals join forces to bring innovation to market

PARTEQ signs master services agreement with Carleton University

April 6, 2011

KINGSTON – Eastern Ontario’s universities and research institutes and their research commercialization offices are joining forces to grow the region’s innovation capacity.

Working together as the Rideau Commercialization Network, research commercialization experts at Queen’s University’s PARTEQ Innovations and the Ottawa Technology Transfer Network (OTTN) aim to increase the impact of innovations from Eastern Ontario’s academic research base by sharing their expertise and resources to advance these discoveries towards the market.

The new Rideau Commercialization Network is being funded through a $1 million investment from the Ontario Centres of Excellence Technology Transfer Partnership (OCE-TTP) program.

“For several years PARTEQ has had the pleasure of working with Ottawa’s universities and affiliated institutes to help advance their discoveries to market,” says John Molloy, President & CEO of PARTEQ.  “With combined research budgets of close to $600 million, our collective institutional research efforts generate a pool of technology opportunities that is both wide and deep.  The establishment of the Rideau Commercialization Network enables us to collaborate more effectively and strategically to make the most of these innovation opportunities.”

“OTTN has integrated the research commercialization activities of the University of Ottawa and its members, including hospital research institutes, for over five years. OTTN has collaborated with PARTEQ on Proof-of-Principle (PoP) funding and other research commercialization activities since 2007,” says Joe Irvine, Director, Technology Transfer Business Enterprise at University of Ottawa and Director of OTTN. “The Rideau Commercialization Network allows OTTN to dedicate resources to commercialization projects and will allow OTTN to work with the expertise of the PARTEQ team on projects to develop and commercialize research discoveries.”

“The establishment of the Rideau Commercialization Network is really what technology transfer is all about,” says Dr. Tom Corr, President & CEO of Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE). “It strengthens public research institution and industry linkages, which benefit the local economy.”

The new network comprises the technology transfer activities at Queen’s University, PARTEQ Innovations, the Royal Military College of Canada, St. Lawrence College, Kingston General Hospital and the Ottawa Technology Transfer Network (University of Ottawa/TTBE), the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO), the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI).

To augment its commercialization activities, the Rideau Commercialization Network has also been awarded $400,000 per year for two years to fund early stage development of promising technologies across the new network. This Proof of Principle (PoP) fund will be administered through PARTEQ, which partnered with OTTN to manage and invest more than $2.5 million in the Eastern Ontario Proof of Principle fund since 2007.

PARTEQ is also pleased to announce that it has signed a master services agreement with Carleton University. Under this agreement PARTEQ will provide its full suite of commercialization services to researchers at Carleton University, including faculty outreach, technology assessment and, where appropriate, technology management.

“Carleton is pleased to partner with PARTEQ to support our researchers and enhance their ability to commercialize their research,” says Dr. Kim Matheson, Vice-President (Research and International) at Carleton. “This partnership provides our researchers with access to PARTEQ's commercialization services and allows them to focus their own energies on doing the cutting-edge, innovative research for which Carleton is increasingly recognized.”

“Carleton has collaborated informally with PARTEQ in providing access to researchers and their technology opportunities for some time,” Mr. Molloy says. “With this agreement we look forward to providing much more in-depth outreach and assistance to the university’s technology innovators.”
