PARTEQ Innovations is a technology transfer organization created by Queen’s University. We work with university and hospital researchers across Eastern Ontario who wish to bring the benefits of their discoveries to the public. PARTEQ provides researchers with the business, intellectual property and financial expertise that is needed to advance their discoveries to the market, while returning the proceeds from those activities to researchers, their respective institutions and investors.
Since 1987 PARTEQ has been instrumental in the establishment of more than 40 companies developing a variety of products and processes. These companies have attracted more than $1 billion in investment and created more than 800 jobs.
PARTEQ takes a hands-on approach to managing its spinoff companies. We have the infrastructure to provide support in all areas including intellectual property protection and management, financial management, communications support, and operations and senior management. The ability to make investments through the Network provides another very valuable tool to complete our capabilities to transform discoveries into commercial product.
Management and staff
A professional staff with more than 90 years of cumulative experience in technology transfer oversees the day-to-day activities of PARTEQ. PARTEQ’s staff complement includes 4 PhDs, 3 MBAs, 5 MScs, 1 CA, and 1 CGA.
Venture fund experience
PARTEQ owns or has assisted with forming a number of venture funds. It has five Ontario Commercialization Investment fund (OCIF)-registered entities, including the Tri-Colour Venture Fund, which provides Queen’s MBA and Commerce students with hands-on experience managing a venture fund using real capital.
In 1998, PARTEQ formed one of Ontario’s first Community Small Business Investment Funds with a $7 million investment from GrowthWorks (formerly Working Ventures and the Canadian Medical Discoveries Fund). Although now fully invested, PARTEQ still manages that fund.
PARTEQ has also been an active participant in the PARTEQ Internet Venture Fund, Diversified Balanced Funds I and II, and Brighter Future Funds I and II.
Increasing the Pipeline
To further expand the pipeline of potential opportunities, PARTEQ has formed collaborations with several other institutions, including Kingston General Hospital, the Royal Military College of Canada, St. Lawrence College, Carleton University and the Canadian Space Agency. PARTEQ is also the lead institution in the Rideau Commercialization Network which incorporates the research institutions in the Ottawa Technology Transfer Network. PARTEQ is also the host institution of GreenCentre Canada. PARTEQ currently has an application pending with FedDev Ontario to fund added commercialization strength in power electronics so as to allow PARTEQ to attract discovery flow in that area from across the country.
